Do you use antivirus software on your Linux machine?
I just use an anti-virus program because I have learned its better to have it than not have it. If the anti-virus software doesn't remove it then I can always manually delete it. This lesson was learned with Windows. But, I figured that I would rather be always safe than sorry.

I did see one good reason in what I read for using a Linux anti-virus product. As an example, you might receive a virus infected Word document via e-mail and use it in Open Office. While it may not be a problem to you, you might pass it on to someone else without ever knowing it was infected. In this case, it's more a case of helping take care of others as opposed to protecting yourself.

Do you use antivirus software on your Linux machine?
I voted "yes" even though I don't go out of my way to install ClamAV or AVG for Linux unless I'm on a network connected to Windows' machines. A firewall is a definite on any computer, I feel. I usually use Firestarter or Guarddog for a firewall. It's always nice to be paranoid in the sense you have all areas covered, but a virus scanner is not needed for Linux as much as it is for Windows. It's good to get into good habits though. :)

Do you use antivirus software on your Linux machine?
I use it on Xandros because it came with it. But, I do have a router that has a built in firewall in it. I will get a pic of it... it may not be my personal one but it will be the same model.

I voted no, but tried clamav for OS X. Once. (does the job)
Do you use antivirus software on your Linux machine?
i'm going to have a separate firewall box setup very soon, pfsense, of course

The biggest threats for *nix machines, IMHO, come from leaving unsecured ports open and not updating server software as security patches come out. Everything should always be behind a firewall (preferably on a different, physical box) and only expose exactly what you need to the rest of the world. Just because you're using Linux doesn't mean you can't be hacked. ;-)

I got to thinking about this today after reading a story at msnbc.com about botnets. While I know the great vast majority of viruses and spyware are aimed at Windows machines, I was curious about the threats against Linux machines and measures users are using to combat them.

I've got ClamAV installed, but I think it is more targeted at scanning Windows partitions from Linux. CrossOver Office uses ClamAV to scan your Windows programs that it runs.

i use it, but i'm not sure how necessary it is, i'd just prefer to be safer than sorry
Linux antivirus
Just curious how many of you are running any type of antivirus software on your Linux machine(s). I don't use any, but wondered if I should.
