Where do you think Linux needs to improve?
i actually have a copy of caldera openlinux 2.2, but its never been used :)

but yeah, the sheer number of distros out there is truly boggling. that was one of things that drove me to happiness (aka, FreeBSD).

I voted for "Better interoperability with Windows" but I wanted to add software at the end of that line. WINE has come a long way, but it still leaves much to be desired.

I am mostly talking about games. I do realize that most of this is because of DirectX, but it would be nice if I could just throw my Half-Life 2 disc in the computer and play it. I know that if this ever happens it will be a ways down the road, and I do realize that there is Transgaming Cedega, but I could never seem to get it to work properly.

But in my mind if linux stays the way it is now great. I will still be using it consistently. The only reason I do not have linux on my desktop is because the only time I am really using it is to play games. Otherwise I just use my laptop for everything else.

I actually voted for fewer distro's, although using Dreamlinux is a little off the beaten path.

For Newbie's especially this can be a very confusing lot to choose from. When I first started trying to find a distro (That I liked), I probably went through 10 - 15 distros trying to find one that I liked without tweaking.

Now that being said, part of my dislike for some distro's may have been due to old hardware. Although I will say that I was not impressed at all with ubuntu. I don't reallly care for Gnome in the first place and I just didn't like the feel of it. I guess a lot needs to be said for personal taste.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

I voted Linux is fine as it is because I love the way Linux has been and is currently being developed. I do hope for better hardware support with drivers, but that will have to come from the manufacturers. They just need to wake up and realize Linux is here to stay. I wish they would understand that better drivers and support means more people might try Linux and buy their hardware. M$'s market share can be reduced. Did you hear me? M$'s market share can be reduced!

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

I chose the "no where I think Linux is fine as is" option because I truly am happy with Linux. The ONLY thing I am not happy with is hardware support(example: ati graphics). I do realize, however, that this is not a fault with Linux.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

I voted "other" because I felt the need to adress a few entries:

Improved hardware support - I noticed most hardware complaints are for off-brand hardware. However you can't blame the linux community, most hardware works for Windows because most are sold for windows and they come with that 'courtesy" cd. The manufacturer is to blame, not the linux community. Microsoft doesn't code geforce, radeon or sound blaster drivers, right?!

Fewer distributions to choose from - A common base architecture would be nice. I hate to admit it, but between Slackware, Gentoo and FreeBSD, when I explore other distros, I freak out over how other systems convolute their /etc configs.

More distributions to choose from - we have enough. see previous. "All incluive" (Ubuntu,) "Highly modular" (RPM based) and "nuts and bolts" (Debian, Slackware, Gentoo) are enough. The various also-rans that appear on distrowatch only reinforce to the FUD mongerers that linux is indeed just a hobby.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

yeah i remember, and for a while it really sounded like a good idea. i thought redhat was in there too, which was i thought why i was really interested in it. but we see what it turned out (nohting).
that UnitedLinux idea from forever ago was a really good idea :( unfortunatly, nothing ever really came to fruition on that.
Did you know that UnitedLinux was a product from SCO, Caldera, Connectiva, Suse and Turbolinux? Interesting to see how many of those companies are still here today...

The LSB (http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/LSB) is the effort behind standardizing Linux. Too bad that you have some distro's that don't play by the rules.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

Oh, I wasent saying it was hard to get running, just that I have to install it is somewhat annoying. And when I'm programing, and get to a point where I'm ready to compile, to have to install GCC throws me out of my groove.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

other - standardization across the board. config file locations, binary locations. i hate the way "everyone does it a different way".

that UnitedLinux idea from forever ago was a really good idea :( unfortunatly, nothing ever really came to fruition on that.
It really throws my day off track when i go to use the make command, and there is no compiler installed.
Well, gcc is the standard Linux compiler available for every distro, so if it's not installed it should be easily available through Distro X's package managment tool.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

I think the only thing that bugs me about linux, and this is comeing from a person who uses C/C++ every damn day....I would like to see more distros come with GCC compilers, or something similar thats just as easy to use.

It really throws my day off track when i go to use the make command, and there is no compiler installed.

Where do you think Linux needs to improve?

Linux is fine, I just wish that hardware companys would support linux/bsd better. Gaming would be nice if someone could steal the directx source code. There are a lot of distros, I think that confuses noobs, but its fine. There are advanced distros and ultra noob distros.

My biggest gripe right now is for BSD video support and flash support. For Linux, 64bit flash support.

To all of the regular Linux users: I know some of these poll items are bogus. Post some links/info to dispel them and help any newbies out who might have an incorrect opinion about Linux. This is to help stimulate dialog and dispel Linux myths.
