Great Open Source apps for Windows Mobile devices
If you have a PDA or Smartphone running Windows Mobile, you may be frustrated with the poor quality of applications that come with your device. Fear not, there are some great Open Source applications that have been ported to the Pocket PC and we're taking a look at some of the best choices.
The device I'm using to test these applications is a Dell Axim x51v running Windows Mobile 5.
Internet
Web browsing with a Pocket PC can be tough, to say the least. The mobile version of Internet Explorer frankly sucks even more than it's desktop counterpart. Luckily there's a port of Firefox for Windows Mobile devices called Minimo: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
Minimo Features:
* Fast access to your mobile content via Homebase start page
* Best support for modern web standards (Javascript and AJAX).
* Social Bookmarking
* Tab browsing
* RSS Support
* Proven security (TLS, SSL3)
* International support
* Cross platform capability
* Widget and Extension support
Remote Computing
If you're away from your office or home computer and need to access files, PocketPC VNCViewer Client is a VNC client that will allow you to do just that from your PDA. I downloaded the last version listed (2k3) and it worked just fine for my Axim: http://www.cs.utah.edu/~midgley/wince/vnc.html

Multimedia
If you have a PDA with a decent sized screen, you can actually comfortably watch video's using the CoreCodec TCPMP / BetaPlayer: http://www.hpcfactor.com/downloads/tcpmp/

This is a very versatile media player that supports:
- AVI (*.avi)
- Matroska (*.mkv, *.mka)
- MP4 (*.mp4, *.m4a)
- Ogg Media (*.ogg, *.ogm)
- ASF (*.asf)
- Mpeg 1 Layer III
- Ogg Vorbis
- Musepack
- Windows Media Audio (on Windows Mobile devices)
- AC-3
- AMR
- Adpcm, uLaw
- DivX
- XviD
- MPEG4-SP (plus B-frame support)
- MPEG1
- M-JPEG
- Windows Media Video (on Windows Mobile devices)
Plus other plug-ins can be downloaded from their site. I've been using this media player for a while now and it should be one of the very first third-party apps you install on your PocketPC, in my opinion.
Games
If you're bored with work and want to dispatch some bad guys with extreme prejudice, might I suggest Quake for your Pocket PC: http://quake.pocketmatrix.com/

Several maps are also available to download and add on.
Other Resources
Ok, this is not technically an "application", but Project Gutenburg is still a great resource that I use quite often: http://www.gutenberg.org/
With over 20,000 free books in plain text format, it's easy to keep your PDA packed full with reading material. The great thing about these books in plain text format is any notepad-like application can view them, so you don't actually need to install any special software to take advantage of this resource. Just download some books and copy to your Pocket PC.
